LONDON โ Chelsea forward Cole Palmer withdrew from England's squad on Monday, September 21, because of a muscle injury, ruling him out of the opening four UEFA Nations League matches and dealing England manager Thomas Tuchel another selection setback ahead of the team's meeting with world champions Spain.
Palmer had been recalled to the England setup only days earlier after missing the country's 2026 World Cup squad. His return had been closely watched because Tuchel had indicated that the Chelsea attacker had an opportunity to re-establish himself with the national team. That opportunity has now been interrupted by the latest injury.
Palmer played the full 90 minutes for Chelsea in their 3-0 Premier League defeat against Brentford on Friday, September 18. He subsequently withdrew from England duty as the national team prepared for a demanding sequence of Nations League fixtures.
Palmer is not the only England player affected. Declan Rice, Marcus Rashford, Tino Livramento and Kobbie Mainoo were also ruled out of the upcoming matches because of injury issues, leaving Tuchel with a reduced group as England begin their Nations League campaign. England have called up Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Everton midfielder James Garner as replacements.
The timing is particularly significant for Palmer because his recall represented a return to the national team following his absence from the World Cup squad. He had started the new domestic season strongly for Chelsea, recording four goal involvements in the Premier League through two goals and two assists.
