Chelsea's early-season campaign is being shaped by two competing storylines at once: strengthening the squad, and managing speculation around some of its existing stars. The club advanced in the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over Luton, but attention quickly shifted beyond the result after Enzo Fernández was left out of the squad.

Fernández's absence has fuelled speculation about interest from elsewhere, including reported interest from Manchester City. At present, however, that speculation shouldn't be treated as confirmation Chelsea intend to sell the midfielder — the club's activity elsewhere in the market tells a different story.

Chelsea have strengthened their goalkeeping options with the reported arrival of Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, adding an experienced international goalkeeper to the squad, while also continuing to develop younger players — meaning the squad is being reshaped at multiple levels simultaneously.

That makes Chelsea one of the more interesting clubs to watch as the transfer window nears its close. Manager Xabi Alonso must balance recruitment, player development, and squad harmony while preparing for a demanding season.

The speculation is now resolved. Enzo Fernández completed a £125 million move to Manchester City on deadline day, matching the British transfer record set by Liverpool's Alexander Isak a year earlier. City's director of football Hugo Viana called him "a complete midfielder: technically gifted, hardworking, tenacious and a goalscorer." For Chelsea, his departure leaves an obvious question — who replaces him in the middle of the park — one that became harder to answer after the club's separate attempt to sign Monaco's Lamine Camara also collapsed on the same day. Chelsea still finished the window in a net profit, having brought in Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers for a club-record £117m as their marquee response.
