Nigeria's football administration has entered a major transition after Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Musa Gusau, general secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the federation's executive committee resigned β only weeks before the previously scheduled NFF elective congress.
The resignations follow a difficult stretch for Nigerian football: the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the Super Falcons subsequently missed qualification for the 2027 Women's World Cup. For the women's team, the miss was especially significant, since Nigeria had appeared at every Women's World Cup since the tournament began.
Gusau said the decision followed consultations with family, friends, and football stakeholders, framing it as an opening for structural change rather than a reaction to one bad result, describing it as making way for βa comprehensive and orderly reform process.β
The NFF has now moved into an interim arrangement: Emmanuel Ikpeme has been appointed to oversee the NFF Secretariat, with Ademola Olajire serving as interim deputy general secretary. The federation has suspended preparations for the September 27 elective congress, with a fresh electoral process expected once reforms are worked out with FIFA, CAF, government, and other stakeholders.
