Honda is preparing one of the largest cost-cutting programmes in its history as competition from Chinese electric-vehicle makers intensifies. According to internal documents reviewed by Stream26 News sources, Honda is targeting savings of 1.5 trillion yen β€” about $9.4 billion β€” by 2030, and has told suppliers to cut prices by as much as 30% across three categories: pressed and forged components, electrical parts, and parts for software-defined vehicles.

The move illustrates how dramatically the global auto industry is shifting. Chinese EV makers β€” led by BYD β€” have entered aggressively with sharp pricing, fast-improving battery technology and software-heavy vehicles, capturing significant market share across Southeast Asia, Latin America and Europe. Honda's cost-cutting push follows its first-ever annual loss as a publicly traded company, reported in May 2026, with EV-related losses expected to eventually exceed $12 billion. Honda shares fell around 2.5% on the news, with affiliated suppliers also trading lower.

Honda and Nissan signed an agreement last month to jointly develop and standardise electronic control units and software for their next-generation vehicles β€” a sign that even fierce domestic rivals are now pooling resources to compete with Chinese manufacturers' cost advantages.
