Ukraine believes another round of talks involving Russia and the United States could become possible in September, opening a potential diplomatic window after negotiations stalled. Ukrainian officials have indicated discussions could involve representatives from Kyiv and Moscow, with U.S. participation regarded as important — but there is no confirmed peace summit at this stage.
That distinction is crucial, because previous diplomatic initiatives have repeatedly run into the same obstacle: territory, and the conditions under which a ceasefire could become permanent. Ukraine wants security arrangements that prevent Russia from using any pause simply to prepare for another offensive, while Russia has continued rejecting proposals it believes would leave its territorial and strategic demands unresolved.
The latest diplomatic movement follows months of attempts by international mediators to build a framework both sides could accept. For Kyiv, renewed talks wouldn't necessarily need to produce an immediate peace agreement — they could also test Moscow's willingness to accept a genuine ceasefire and gauge whether Washington remains prepared to invest political capital in ending the war.
