Germany has accused Russia of involvement in an attempted explosive-drone operation at Leipzig/Halle Airport, escalating what began as a security investigation into a direct confrontation between Berlin and Moscow. German authorities say an explosive-equipped drone was discovered at the airport — a discovery that matters because airports are among the most sensitive pieces of civilian infrastructure in Europe.
Berlin has attributed the incident to Russian-linked activity; Moscow has rejected the accusation. That leaves two separate questions. The factual one — was there an explosive-equipped drone? — Germany says yes. The attribution question — who put it there? — is considerably harder to resolve and remains unproven publicly.
European governments have increasingly warned about Russian “hybrid” operations: activities that fall below the threshold of open warfare but include sabotage, espionage, cyberattacks, disinformation and infrastructure attacks. German airports and military sites have reported a rising number of unexplained drone sightings over the past two years, and the Leipzig case is being read by German officials in that broader context rather than as an isolated incident.
